The Horrors of Online Dating & Relationships

Online dating started several years ago with the development of the Internet. The grandaddy of  all is Match.com. Since its humble beginnings, it has exploded into a multi-million dollar a year franchise, with close to 20M members. It has spawned numerous offspring, such as eHarmony, Plenty of Fish, PerfectMatch, OK Cupid, SinglesNet, True, MyLife, and others.

It is beginning to branch out into specialty dating subgroups such as Brainiac Dating, ChristianSingles, Christian based Love and Seek, XXX-Adult Dating (which is a slick cover for prostitution), PetLoversDate, as well as host of other groups.

I am now waiting for Cowboys & Girls Date, NASCAR Lovers Date, Athletic Singles Mingle, Divorced SingleParents, and whatever the capitalist business mind can possibly imagine. The more specialized the group, the fewer the number of member it has, with some as few as 50K.

Many lure you in with the promise of  "free." If you have not figured it out by now, nothing is for free. To answer emails, or in anyway interact with the person interested in your "profile," you have to pony up anywhere between $20 or more per month. Not exactly cheap given the quality of the choices.

There are also other deceptions to separate you from your money. One is called the upgraded or premium member, where you get top slot in the dating dog race. In this particular case, your photo and profile are posted ahead of all others, who choose not to shell out the extra dollar for having the privilege of being seen first

The sites are all fundamentally the same. You adopt a USERNAME, which in a word, ostensibly characterizes you, a photo or photos, and a profile that has several subsections which contain various aspects of your personality, interests, and what you are looking for in a potential mate.

The profiles are predictably the same. Women have their own buzzwords, such as funny, humorus, and  entertaining. The men are to be kind, gentle, good-hearted, and financially secure. There is never a peep about any past or current medical or psychological problems. Heaven forbid anyone actually admit that they have or are currently taking Zolof, Xanax, or other psychotropic medication, a cancer survivor, or even admit to being a diabetic. By the way they describe themselves, they are definitely astronaut material..

The photos range from cheesy self-taken ones, where you can actually see the person holding the camera, to professional glamour shots, with the person is in a provocative pose with full make-up, dress, hair, lighting, etc. They are usually accompanied by a headline or caption, which is a truncated sentence that tells you who they are and what they are looking for, such as "Good-Hearted Man",  "Mr, Right", or "Prince Charming." There will occasionally be a few "God Fearing" "Christian"  or other religious interjections. I have yet to see "Muslim" or "Buddhist" however.

Some have gone to the extremes of setting up webcams and VoIP communication, but this technology is generally reserved for the sexually explicit websites and probably handled by the IT manager of the brothel.

The women in the 45-60 something age range, of which I am a part, tend to be in politically correct terms, full-figured, curvy, and/or BBW (big and beautiful.)  As far as their real appearance, they are average, plain, or unremarkable. Personalities range from the princess, diva, narcissist, ego centrist, and snotty, to the gentle, kind, thoughtful, and caring. There does not seem to be a middle ground.

Men are definitely the defacto losers in this game. The male/female ratio is about 4 to 1, which put we men at a distinct disadvantage-maybe.

I am not totally convinced that even Peirce Brosnan could make a favorable impression on these ladies- so what does? It is certainly not intelligence, occupation, financial security, appearance, achievement,  or English composition. That really only leaves a few vital statistics such as age, weight, height, and how well they are at stroking a woman's ego, satisfying their need for attention, or attend to their every whim.

My sense is that they (women) are really living in a fantasy world, where they are acting-out the role of Mrs. Robinson seeking  "The Graduate." In this way, they are turning back the aging process in virtual time and reality. When a man grows old, he becomes mature, a woman on the other hand, morphs into a hag.

Without physical attractiveness and sexuality, they have little if anything, to offer a man, much less the world. They literally begin to panic, hence the tremendous increase in panic disorders which also leads to depression. To compensate, they begin to shout from the rooftops, or in this case their profiles, as to how beautiful, good, kind, compassionate, and sensual they are.

To take their minds off their own misery, they seek someone who will make them laugh, take them globetrotting, adore them, and recreate life before their husbands divorced them and they were Queen for the Decades.

I am sure many, if not all females reading this blog, will be offended. Unfortunately, truth and reality usually does upset and offend those who are guilty.
